The great saint Tukaram wrote thousands of poems, one of them is, “vedha vedha re pandhari”. : The only saint whose literature submerged/actually immersed in the river Chandrabhaga. It was a painful experience not only to the saint Tukarama but all those people who know his greatness. When people started singing one by one abhanga after the incident of Emerson, it came to know that his poems were in the mind and on the lips of people that’s why it was called abhang. Abhanga itself is a self explanatory word. Abhang means unbreakable. ABHANG – neither one can break nor can destroy. The word has it’s own meaning as in Indian culture every name has a meaning. No meaningless name is given to a child in naming ceremony. Here Abhang means not disposable. Abhang means eternal one.
On the path of devotion complete trust and selflessness require. so The greatest saint in Maharashtra, Who wrote thousands of poems on Lord Vitthala which are known as “Tukarama’s Abhanga”. His literature is selected for degree colleges and studies for the P. HD. Vast and quality literature created by the great sage. The central theme in his poems/ abhang is “devotion” . One of those is, “vedha vedha re pandhari”. Lord Vithal is the aaradhya daivat of Maharashtra. Aradya means the first who willingly trusts and devotes “HIM“. Maharashtrians trust Lord Vithala as their Aaradya. All his poems are meaningful and devotional. Some poems can be understood while reading but some have deep meanings.
Though “HE” is everywhere, holy and significant place for devotees of lord Vithal is Pandharpur. The name Pandharpur is also the symbol of devotion. It is situated on the bank of Rivers Bheema and Chandrabhaga. Founder of this holy pilgrimage is saint Dnyaneshwar in twelfth century. This holy Pilgrimage is known as “VARI“. One of the best and devotional abhanga with deep meaning is vedha vedha re pandhari.
Vedha vedha re pandharpur means, the place where Lord vithal stays, all pilgrims please encircle the place. All devotees, all saints please come together and encircle Lord Vitthala . Lord is staying on the bank of river bheema and chandrabhaga. Let us gather together at Pandharpur. First two lines express the strong desire to reach Pandharpur the holy place where Lord Vittal stays. Pilgrims, saints, devotees from various parts gather to meet him at the holy place.
In the next two lines saint Tukaram appeals to all sages, saints and devotees to join and engage in spiritual journey. He continues to emphasize the spiritual journey and seeking the blessings of Lord.
It’s not easy to choose and constantly continue staying on the devotional path. So deep connection of Lord and devotee is must. Complete surrender to lord and seeking blessings by HIM is expressed in the next two lines in the poem.
Although there are lots of suffering and challenges on the devotional path, one should not leave or change the root. It’s a journey of spiritual battle.
All pilgrims call Lord vithal as mauli i.e. mother. Devotion is the symbolic name of Pandharpur. Saint Tukaram says all devotees let us loot the devotion from pandarpur. Lord Vithal and Rakhumai is the spiritual couple so, will catch and hold the husband of Rakhumai for blessings.
Finally saint Tukarama says, those who will deceive or create obstacles in the path towards Lord Vitthala (ie lust, anger, greed, pride, hatred are all six enemies) or create obstacles in the path between devotees and Lord Vitthala’s will have victory over those negative feelings.
